Today's newspaper talked about 5 year old female kids getting more and more obsessed with their appearance in this increasingly 'weight hostile' environment.
This is stale news to most of us. I myself was a victim, at a slightly older but tender age of 10 years old. When I was 10 , i never thought myself as FAT. In fact, I had so much self esteem in me that I was really really insulted when the teacher announced that I had to enter into the Trim And Fit programme.
Whaaaaat? The worst thing was that they made us little plump kids come earlier to school for that extra jog, and deprived us of our recess breaks by eating up 15 minutes of our half an hour just to do a tad bit of sit ups and star jumps. I thought I was even more depressed.
I remembered embarassing instances whereby the TAF teacher in charge barged into the classroom and blastered out at the top of her voice -' can the TAF girls in this class come out now!!!'. There were only two of us-me and this other girl by the name of Juliene. In my point of view, she was twice my size. i hated the moment in which I had to sheepishly walk out of the class , bearing the scrutiny and stifled laughs from my fellow peers.
Relatives were just as cruel. They joked about the way TAF was spelt as FAT backwards and laughing at how apt it sounded. One of my uncles even made fun of the way I dressed-saying how frumpy my big t shirt and tights looked on me. He even called me a 'maid'!. At that time, I was trying to conceal the bulges around my tummy and hence the shapeless outfit. I thought it was just mean and horrible for a kid like me to endure that i made up my mind to go on a full time Diet.
I forced myself to do the 'Great Singapore Workout' everyday, except with even greater gusto! Every pump foward with the palms was asserted with greater force. Yes, if you think about it, it's fucking lame. Hahaha...And I even drew stick figurines that showed the number of starjumps, sit ups, stretches I had to do every morning.
yes, after all the effort and determination, i got out of TAF the following year. It was truely a nightmare.
When I hear of kids having depression over their image, i can definitely feel their anguish. I was happy that I got out of it, healthy and accomplished. Weight is definitely not an easy thing to deal with and it ties in with one's confidence and self esteem. And I feel even more sad to know that more and more younger kids are facing the same problem as I did. =/
